[Proposal from the Japanese Society for Clinical Cytology] Regarding the indications for cytological examination (mainly ROSE) in COVID-19 patients

The Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology (JSCC) has issued the following recommendations regarding ROSE in coronavirus pandemic.

  1. In principle, the presence of COVID-19 infection itself does not preclude the use of ROSE, but it may be used only when the advantages from a medical standpoint outweigh the disadvantages, and when adequate protection can be provided.

  2. In principle, the tests should be conducted when there is adequate reserve for protective clothing, and when it is necessary to conduct the tests immediately.

  3. In municipalities where a state of emergency has been declared, consideration should be given to suspending the implementation of non-urgent cases in order to limit the flow of people.

“Consideration of practicality of Mobile Rose in Thyroid Puncture Aspiration Cytology.”
LBC cytology with BD CytoRichTM Red Preservative,
the accuracy of the Mobile Rose test is high, with sensitivity (94.6%), specificity (100%), and positive predictive value (100%),
useful for rapid determination of FNA materials on-site, operation time 90.1 seconds, effective for rapid evaluation of specimens.

Determination can be made without the need for a pathologist or cytotechnologist. High false negative rate (42.9%), difficulty in recognizing small cell clusters.

Above points were presented as a result of the verification.
